One of Sony's more buzz-worthy exhibits at the Tokyo Game Show was their 3-D demonstration of Wipeout. Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Kaz Hirai followed up on their TGS spectacle during a press briefing with a statement which suggested that 3-D PlayStation 3 games may not be far off at all.
Famitsu, via Andriasang, reports that Sony is aiming to have the PlayStation 3 fully compatible with 3-D television sets in 2010, and would like for the technology to be ready with games available when the new televisions begin to roll into stores. And all current PS3 owners will need to enjoy an intermission in the third dimension is a simple firmware update.
Hirai went on to talk about the benefits of such technology, and how PlayStation 3 and Blu-ray could aid in making it more prolific. He noted that games which do not take up the full 50 gigabytes of available space could include game demos and movie trailers.
And while not tying it to the 3D capabilities directly, Hirai did have on hand one of the upcoming motion controllers for the PlayStation 3, stating it would become the console's "second defacto controller," following the DualShock 3. However, he did not give a name nor a release date for the peripheral.
