Do you remember when the PS3's Home service was first announced? It was heralded as one of the PS3's holy pillars, flanked by radiant beams of light and costume glitter. As long as we're taking this trip down memory lane, do you remember when Home was delayed? Oh! And do you remember when it was delayed again? Man, good times. Good times. But the party isn't over yet, because Sony has extended Home's closed beta into the summer, meaning that the open beta -- which will allow all comers to take a step into the little world inside their PS3s -- won't be starting until fall 2008. And the final version of Home? Who knows? Maybe the PS3 is simply a vehicle for the Home beta, with the true version of Home currently in development for the PS4.
If you can't tell, I'm getting a little tired of waiting for Sony to wrench the padlock off the gates to Home. And frankly, I have my doubts about the service's ability to go beyond the status of simple novelty, but, as has become plainly obvious, Sony still has boatloads of tweaking to do before Home hits the e-streets.
Still though, I suppose Sony's right to play it safe in this situation. No one has ever tried to integrate a social "game" so thoroughly with everything from other games to streaming movies, and, with all the hype Home has garnered, millions of gamers have their pitchforks sharpened and ready to go in case Sony messes things up.
In light of all that, I'm wishing Sony my best. And as long as LittleBigPlanet comes out on time, I'll be ecstatic regardless of when Home comes out.
