SOCOM Confrontation – I Can, so Can You!

I remember playing the very first SOCOM game. It was one of those defining moments for me to finally see how cool the PS2 was. The teamwork, the planning and the action made me realize that gaming was never going to be the same. Whereas PCs had their Counter-Strike, console gamers now had their SOCOM. To be really good, you probably need some military training rather than a twitchy finger unlike other third person shooters. The team behind this SOCOM now has all the intel on the PS3 and Sony is going to be releasing SOCOM: Confrontation next month. But you already knew that.
I got a beta invite from a friend of mine that pre-ordered the game. Seeing that I'm usually terrible at tactical games, I graciously accepted the code knowing that I'd be served. After a few games, I'm happy to report I'm not the worst SOCOM player out there. That is, when you can actually find a game. It isn't because the servers are empty, it is the exact opposite. They are jam packed. For the first few days, it was impossible to get on. After a patch, things have smoothed out a little. What I was surprised at is that I was able to make a meaningful contribution to my team from the first spawn.
A game like SOCOM is very dependent on how well your entire team performs. If you try and go all Rambo on the map, you'll be as about as effective as shooting a squirt gun underwater. The key is using your headset to coordinate whereabouts of friends and enemies alike. The more you know about positions, the better you will perform naturally. To oversimplify what I mean, teamwork = FTW!!!
There are other ways you can easily be a better player, and if you have played Call of Duty 4 you know what to do. Pick a weapons set that works well with your personal style. I'm usually out in front taking the back alleys and I found an SMG works for my needs.
For squad based games like this can cause extreme amounts of frustration and hair loss. Thankfully, the beta seems n00b friendly and that is a good sign because the kinds of people that pre-order games are usually the super fans. The conclusion is that I'm looking forward to getting the final product to see if I can still stay off the bottom of the leaderboards.
