Kombo's Review Policy: Our reviews are written for you. Our goal is to write honest, to-the-point reviews that don't waste your time. This is why we've split our reviews into four sections: What the Game's About, What's Hot, What's Not and Final Word, so that you can easily find the information you want from our reviews.
What the Game's About
Buzz! Quiz TV is the first PlayStation 3 attempt at the casual trivia game after a successful run on the PlayStation 2. New to this game are some new modes that will link couches and bring out the fact finder in all of us.
What's Hot
With wireless buzzer in hand, you get the feeling that it isn't a standard quiz game. It sets the mood for the party and when the questions start flying having a buzzer in your hand keeps the party alive. Gathering people in a room and playing a game will result in raucous laughter and fun because the party atmosphere Quiz TV creates.
The longevity that Quiz TV has the possibility to provide is astounding. Not only can you download quiz packs in the future to boost the standard 5,000 question available on the disk, you can create your own questions to add to the overall mix. Going online in the Sofa vs. Sofa mode virtually fills your living room with wacky characters.
Quiz TV is the great kind of party game that previously was missing from the PS3's library. It incorporates other PS3 peripherals, like the PS Eye, to add other dimensions to the game that make it goofy and fun. It doesn't pretend to be a game with a deep plot or riveting action, it embraces being a quiz game and uses that platform to lightly spoof "reality" quiz shows like Deal or No Deal or 1 vs. 100. The end result is a party game that will connect with core and casual gamers alike.
What's Not
It is hard to imagine being able to enjoy playing Quiz TV all by yourself. If you don't immediate access to friends or the internet, there is little reason to play this game unless you are a huge trivia buff. Even then, you'll run the questions dry and making up your own quiz defeats the purpose of that mode when playing solo.
One minor criticism is that the game is hard to navigate the menus with the buzzers. You can navigate but it is fairly clunky. The red buzzer advances screens and the color coded buttons move up and down. It is not optimal but given in the input method, it functions.
Final Word
I had no prior experience with the Buzz! franchise before the PSP and PS3 versions. I can see why these games are so popular, they are fun with friends. There is plenty of entertainment to go around and I, for one, will be back to test my wits against all challengers.
