TGS 2008: Resistance 2

There was a long wait time to play Resistance 2, which unfortunately turned out to be wasted time. I liked the original and am a big fan of the storyline and concept but my first impressions of number 2 are not good. The graphics are of Halo 3 standard at their very best and of Halo 2 at their worst. I experienced a wall jutting out awkwardly from the side of a spider mech's leg, some horrible rough texturing and some very pixelated fireballs/bullets. Okay, I do sound a tad harsh and a game is about gameplay and not visuals so I will explain my experience with the demo.
This was the longest line I was in for the whole show and I got 12 minutes with the game, so I was eager to begin when I finally got the chance. I began in a base of some kind, surrounded by mountains in the distance. From the trailer, I gather the game is set in Iceland. After walking through a few corridors I encountered an ally, who then became labeled on my screen with an icon showing the distance I was from him. I followed him to find a gang of five aliens who I shot with relative ease. The controls remain the same as the original but feel slow compared to Far Cry 2 and the like. I went up some stairs to find the aforementioned giant mech spider. I fired a rocket or two at it and continued the level, which presented itself in a rather linear fashion. The triggers in the game were obvious to see, but that is expected from most games. What annoyed me was the "invisible walls," which I know are necessary, but at least put a fence there or something. Also, some places you can walk through one way, but once you are past it, you cannot jump back up even though it is in range of your jumping abilities. Enemies were quite interesting and my gun had the ability to turn them green, but I am not completely sure of what that did. The chimera return and a new invisible enemy has been added. These guys were hard to kill and were a decent addition to the game.
The game feels solid and I'm aware it's a few weeks away from release but some graphical issues need to be addressed before then. The gameplay in single player mode is enjoyable enough, if not especially innovative. I'm still looking forward to Resistance 2, as the multiplayer, including 8-player co-op will hopefully really shine through the otherwise potentially bland single player mode. Fingers crossed that I like the full game more.
