Sony Updates Home and Silences the Masses -- Literally
December 18, 2008 | 12:00 PM PST

As promised, Sony went about updating PlayStation Home today, taking the servers offline as of midnight PST. Service should be restored by now, with version 1.04 in place.

The main reason for the maintenance, according to the PlayStation.Blog, is to address the issue people have faced in accessing the service due to high demand.

But then again, given how underwhelmed people seem to be by it, it could potentially have been a problem that would have taken care of itself in due course, anyway. Still, better safe than sorry.

Actually being able to get in to Home is not the only change made, however:

Additionally, as part of version 1.04, the voice chat feature within PlayStation Home will be temporarily suspended. As soon as we are ready to resume the voice chat feature, we will inform you via PlayStation.com and PlayStation.Blog. In the meantime, we encourage users to make use of the Wireless Keypad for PLAYSTATION 3 or any USB or Bluetooth-enabled keyboard for text chat and also the "phone friend" features to communicate within PlayStation Home.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and kindly ask for your understanding. -- PlayStation.Blog

That's right: Sony just told you to sit down, shut up, and drink your damn milk. Only without the milk part.

Of course, for some, this may be an improvement, in much the same way a mute button can make Xbox Live more fun.
